Home Sweet Home
It's good to be back home after traveling so much this month! And weekends like this are special reminders of how truly blessed I am to have a roof over my head and a warm home to come back to.
Friday afternoon, Shanta, Ken and I hopped a plane to Denver for our quarterly Dry Bones Board meeting. We hadn't been up since April, and we were excited about a new opportunity with Dry Bones.
If you're not familiar with Dry Bones, the ministry works to share Christ with the homeless street kids of Denver. Recent surveys show that there are about 1,000 kids from 12-25 years who are on their own on the streets of Denver. Dry Bones works to share the new life of Christ with these kids, while encouraging Christians to start a "dance" with people who are often outcast by society.
Many of these kids have been on the streets and on their own since they were children. Because they've grown up on the streets, they know no other way to make money but to beg or steal. They don't know how to cook a meal, prepare for a job interview, or do laundry. Even if they did know how--where could they do it? In their "squat" under the railroad tracks? Next to the bushes where they sleep? As the kids come off the street, Dry Bones realized that the kids were not equipped with the life skills to really find success on their own. But not anymore.
It was so encouraging to walk into a beautiful 2,000 square foot, three bedroom apartment in downtown Denver on Saturday morning. This new apartment is now the downtown home for Dry Bones. The ministers have set up offices in the bedrooms and will be able to teach cooking classes, computer skills, and basic life needs to the street kids. Soon, if a kid needs to shower for a job interview, she has a nice, safe place to clean up. Soon, a street kid can learn how to buy groceries, prepare a meal, and even save the leftovers. Soon, street kids will be able to sit in a living room and watch t.v.--something I take for granted, but a luxury for them.
But, like any home, it needs some furnishings. The new home for the Dry Bones Ministry is almost ready to open its doors, but before the cooking classes start, they need pots and pans. Before movie night, they need a couch and t.v. Before cleaning up for a job interview, they need towels and a shower curtain. So it's time to bless this ministry and really turn this empty apartment into a resource for the street kids.
Dry Bones is having a "Virtual Shower" to give us all the opportunity to furnish the apartment. No, you don't have to play any shower games, and unfortunately the cake and punch just don't travel well through cyberspace.
