Good Nuggets for Life

Had the great opportunity to hear an inspirational speaker this week--Eric Greitens--a Navy SEAL, purple heart recipient, and founder of an organization called: The Mission Continues.   The organization serves to continue to bring purpose, leadership, and direction to veterans after they return from service.  

Eric shared some really powerful thoughts with our Team and I just couldn't help but share them. 

With a compass, if you set your course in a particular direction, then you can go and go and go--over mountains, across rivers, through all types of terrain--and you'll end up in a particular spot. But if you change your heading just one or two degrees, and re-orient yourself just a bit--you can wind up in a very different place.  So be intentional about the course of your life.  Set your headings, and stay on course. 

He shared that throughout SEAL training, they started with a class of 220, but by the end, only 21 graduated.  They noted that the dropouts happened not when their task was grueling, but when a candidate had time to THINK about the difficulties that lay ahead.   Don't stop to think about it.  If you've set yourself in the right direction at the start, then take a small step to do the hard thing that's just in n front of you.  Don't get consumed with the daunting tasks on the horizon.  Just focus on setting one foot in front of another, and you will soon find yourself at your destination.  

"We don't create ourselves in a flash."  The courage that shapes us isn't necessarily about bravery, it's a courage of perseverance.  

Finally he shared about his new role as he works with returning heroes to ask them to continue to serve.  Sometimes it's hard to challenge someone to move beyond their comfort zone.  But if you care about someone enough that you're willing to put them in a bit of pain for their greater good, then you can tap into their capacity for courageous change.
