My Blood Is Boiling!
There are only a few things that can really get me angry in life. One of those things is when someone I love is threatened or misrepresented. Well, right now, I am angry!
Southwest Airlines launched the fight to repeal the antiquated Wright Amendment last November.
(As background--the Wright Amendment is a law that restricts flights from Dallas Love Field Airport to cities in Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Alabama, Mississippi and Kansas. Yep, just seven states outside of the Texas border. It was passed in 1979 to protect the newly built DFW airport. (In comparison today, SWA operates a little more than 100 flights per day from Love, while AA flies more than 900 flights a day from DFW currently.)) Hi. We live in America. How 'bout a little capitalism here people! Maybe you've heard of a concept called free enterprise??
So in our quest for repeal, we launched an ad campaign with slogans such as "Wright is Wrong" and our web site www.setlovefree.com. Well, clearly, repealing this outdated law means that American would have to lower airfares from DFW to compete. Again, capitalism, supply and demand, Adam Smith, maybe these are familiar concepts?? So DFW and AA are none too excited about having to actually compete on a level playing field and have launched an ad campaign in the DFW area that completely misrepresents Southwest. Radio, billboards, TV--every time I see an ad, I get angry! It's just not right.
So, for those of you in the DFW Metroplex, let me emphasize--those commercials are not from Southwest. We do not want to fly from DFW where the average taxi time is 29 minutes (that's average folks--a half an hour should be an episode of Friends, not the time it takes you to get from the gate to takeoff.) We do not want to divide our operations--who from Amarillo would want to fly from AMA-Love Field, then change airports to DFW just to be able to connect to Orlando??? We do want to repeal the Wright Amendment and offer low-fare, long-haul flights from Love Field.
So what can you do? If you want great service to the other 42 states of the Union from Love Field then PLEASE, write your Congressional Representatives. Senators, Congressmen, whomever you can. Ask them to bring low fares to your area by repealing the Wright Amendment. And by all means, don't believe everything you see on tv. There is some pretty slanderous propaganda out there from the folks at DFW. If you want to keep the Wright Amendment and continue to pay high airfare, that's one thing, but just make sure you're not buying into a lie.
